The 7 Legacy Characters Of Spider-Man NWH, Ranked
No Way Home lived up to its hype, giving closure to both Holland's Peter Parker and the many legacy Spider-Man villains and heroes that came before.
Since the introduction of the multiverse with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, fans have been desperately clamoring for a live-action Spider-Verse story that brings back beloved characters.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures revealed Alfred Molina's return as Doctor Octopus for Spider-Man: No Way Home and fans immediately went wild.
Marvel fans speculated that Tom Holland's third film would be a multiversal one.
It quickly became apparent just how ambitious Jon Watts' latest project was going to be with the return of multiple villains.
Yet somehow, No Way Home lives up to the impossible hype. It gave closure to Holland's Peter Parker and the many legacy Spider-Man characters that came before.
7. Rhys Ifans' Lizard Feels Like A Glorified Cameo
Among the legacy characters to return, Rhys Ifans is barely featured in No Way Home's expansive plot. Debuting in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, Ifans plays Dr. Curt Connors. Connors is an Oscorp scientist determined to regrow a missing limb using lizard genetics.
After an experiment inevitably goes awry, Connors is transformed into the Lizard and becomes the villain that allows Andrew Garfield to come into his own as Spider-Man.
Ifans mainly finds himself trapped in his Lizard form for his limited screen time in No Way Home.
Furthermore, the Lizard really only butts heads with Holland's Spidey during the final confrontation, as Doctor Strange is the one responsible for his initial capture in the sewers of New York City.
6. Thomas Haden Church's Sandman Just Wants To Go Home
Jamie Foxx's portrayal as Electro in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is largely meant with apprehension due to Sony's poor choices in character design and backstory.
After falling into a vat of electric eels, Dillon gains the power to control electricity while also beginning to hear voices.
Fortunately, despite not having a massive role, No Way Home does Electro justice in a way that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't.
Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios elect to do away with the disembodied voices plaguing Dillon's thoughts.
Foxx also has a comic-book-accurate makeover, transforming his electric powers into Electro's iconic yellow glow that occasionally forms the electrical star mask.
Many fans predicted that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would reprise as their respective Spider-Men in No Way Home.
Though, both Marvel and Sony were tight-lipped about the potential appearance.
Fans were overjoyed when the pair stepped through portals and onto the silver screen again.
Neither Maguire nor Garfield was relegated to mere cameos. They were an integral part of Holland's climactic battle, facing down several of his most iconic foes.
Maguire shines when he steps in to stop Holland's Peter from killing Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. Though Peter wanted revenge, Maguire silently reminded his MCU counterpart of their obligation to do the right thing.
3. Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus Is A Scene Stealer
Otto Octavius is widely regarded as one of the greatest Spider-Man villains of all time and has become the silver screen archetype of the supervillain with a tragic backstory.
While Doc Ock finds redemption at the end of Spider-Man 2, No Way Home dials Molina's character back to his status as a villain, forcing Peter to restore the good doctor's brilliant mind.
Now restored to his original self, Molina's Octavius becomes an invaluable asset to the Spider-Men when he incapacitates Electro.
2. Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man Finally Finds Redemption
Though Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films have largely been met with disdain from fans over the years, much of Andrew Garfield's potential as the iconic web-slinger seems to have remained untapped. Until 2021's No Way Home. Despite having less screen time than in his own solo films, Garfield turns in his best performance yet as Spider-Man during his brief tenure in the MCU.
No Way Home gives Garfield another chance to express the remorse he feels in the wake of Gwen Stacy's death. Fortunately, the hero is given a much-needed pep talk by Maguire's Peter before the final battle. This gives him the courage needed to save MJ from falling to her death in the ultimate act of redemption.
1. Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin Is Holland's Greatest Foe
After nineteen long years, Willem Dafoe makes his full return as Spider-Man's arch-nemesis, the Green Goblin.
Unquestionably, Norman Osborn is the main villain, pushing Holland's Peter onto a dark path after he savagely murders Aunt May with his famous glider.
Peter's ensuing grief makes No Way Home the most authentic Spider-Man story from the MCU.
Setting Dafoe apart from his other legacy predecessors are the stipulations he issued for a sizable role and permission to do his own stunts.
That means that the brutal fights between Dafoe's Goblin and Holland's Spider-Man fans witness are all done by Dafoe himself, a truly impressive feat given the visceral nature of the gut-wrenching showdown.
